Just wondering why some of the Tangerine phase plugs on certain drivers I've seen are black and others are orange? I've seen people trying to sell a pair of drivers with one of each over the years - 1 black and 1 orange. They both are usually 11 "slice" ones. Just wondering if there was any difference? Did they just change colors on certain drivers or in certain years? Thanks!

Perhaps the maker was out of orange plastic for a rush order? Or lead time may have been too long. Once in stock, Altec would have used on a potluck basis.

I've heard the black ones have better HF extension. As if half a veil is removed from the soundstage which is actually 1" wider than with the orange plugs.

GPA phase plugs are not the same as Altec regardless of color. There were gray Altec phase plugs too.

I think they are the same. I suspect, in the later days, money was tight, so malller inventories. Lead time on fancy colors would be longer than black or grey.

That black one looks like there was still a little gray compound in the sprue or barrel when it was shot. QC would have sent that part back to me when i worked in injection molding.
